Connect students need to satisfy Registration Standard 14 for Non-Government Schools. The provision of educational programmes exclusively by means of online-only learning is restricted to students who are: - (a) geographically isolated; - (b) temporarily living or travelling interstate or overseas; - (c) participating in elite performance in sport or the arts; or - (d) unable to attend at a school due to: - (i) diagnosed physical or mental illness or disability; - (ii) bail conditions; or - (iii) another special circumstance acceptable to the Director General. In 2024 we are open to Year 7 enrolments. In 2025, we will be open to Years 6, 7 and 8 enrolments. In 2026, we will be open to 6 to 10. ### Will my child have opportunities to socialise with other students in-person? Our Connect staff are committed to building a community for both students and parents. Our orientation camp runs in January and is an excellent way for our families to meet and for students to form friendships with their classmates. Later in the year we have a second week long camp to continue to foster strong connections and try some outdoor education that will build students trust and confidence. In addition, we organise other events that students can be part of if they wish. This includes sporting events or regional catchups. ### Can my child access all subjects from the Australian curriculum through Connect? Like any other school, Scotch Global Connect teaches children all aspects of the Western Australian curriculum. All content can be taught remotely and with a practical element, so students have the full experience of school. We send out equipment to students each term to make sure they are prepared for all our learning and in addition, students have access to the Scotch Global library. ### How is the curriculum delivered in the remote learning program? The learning is delivered in a variety of ways to keep the learning engaging and relevant to the content and tasks they are expected to complete. However, we have deliberately separated out the independent learning from the collaborative learning so we can be most efficient with student’s time. ### How is the independent learning delivered? The independent learning will be delivered through SEQTA, our learning management platform which gives students access to all the content. The content is delivered to students in a varied way through this platform and includes written explanations, audio, videos, animations, questions, research tasks and activities. After each response, students have a chance to check their understanding against a model answer. If they need further support, they can ask for help in the comment box or share their own reflection. The teacher has real time access to our students’ comments and their answers, so can provide critical feedback as they learn. If the student is experiencing significant issues, they can contact the teacher directly via email or Teams. This method of delivery reduces the need for parent interaction and allows the student to work independently. ### How is the collaborative learning delivered? The students need to complete the independent learning to be best prepared for the collaborative learning where students will have the chance to discuss their ideas, seek further guidance and work on small group activities to present back to their teacher and peers. Research suggests that students who are well prepared for learning feel confident and are more likely to make the most out of the collaborative sessions as they will know what is expected of them. This makes the collaborative classes exciting, fun, interactive and something students look forward to. ### Is there any homework? The homework for your child is encompassed in the independent learning. All the expectations for the course will be contained within these modules and therefore your child will not feel like there is additional work to the school day. Of course, when assessments arise, they may want to take some time to review previous work to ensure they are demonstrating their very best standard. ### Is there a set daily timetable for virtual classes? Students at Scotch Global Connect have a daily timetable that they will need to follow for all collaborative sessions, occurring between 8:00 am to 11:10 am each day. There is also a schedule for independent learning, however, the timing for this is flexible. Students have choice over when this is completed throughout the day. ### Are there programs for student support or enrichment? Personalised learning is a critical aspect of the education provided through Scotch Global Connect. We work hard to understand your child’s strengths and gaps in their knowledge and skills. To ensure that we help every child reach their potential, we offer both support and extension and we will work with you to demonstrate how this done. Every student’s journey is unique and therefore as specialised teachers, we know how to help them on their pathway to get the best possible outcomes. ### How will I know what resources are needed for the terms learning? You will be sent a physical resource package at the beginning of each term that will contain all necessary items for the practical components of learning. E.g. bubble wrap, scales, books etc. We also include a list of regular household items that you will need. E.g. salt, food dye, glue etc. ### How will student assessments be conducted? Assessment is an important part of understanding how your child is progressing against the standards outlined by the School’s Curriculum and Standards Authority. We will be ensuring assessments are a regular part of your child’s learning programme and you will be informed of when and how they will be conducted through our assessment calendar for the term. Two weeks after the assessment has been sat, the marked assessment, and feedback will be provided to both the student and the parents. This feedback will include a mark that aligns to the judging standards and a marking rubric that highlights what went well and areas for improvement. ### Does my child do NAPLAN and OLNA? Yes, your child will be expected to do NAPLAN, unless identified as being exempt as outlined by National Assessment Program guidelines. Our teachers will be using NAPLAN data together with school-based assessments and aptitude testing to review our programmes. This approach to academic tracking ensures we are meeting the needs of every learner. As a parent you will be provided with a copy of your child’s NAPLAN report, and should you need further clarification, we will happily meet to discuss how this information is used in assisting their academic progress. ### How can parents get in touch with the school? The relationship between the parents and the teaching staff is very important to us. We encourage parents to make contact via email or phone. Our staff are dedicated and committed to helping all our students and will return emails or calls within 48 hours. ### Does the remote learning program offer co-curricular activities? The learning itself throughout the day is designed to offer wide ranging activities that encompass traditional co-curricular programmes. This aspect is built into their tasks and activities, making it easier for students to enjoy their day and balance hard work with more enjoyable and relaxing tasks. Our co-curricular programme is always based on students interests and as we get to know your child, we will be looking for further opportunities to make sure these passions can be explored. Some of the areas that we can provide additional support in is music, chess, debating, book club, art club, yoga and sport. ## The enrolment process ### What is the tuition fee for Connect Year 7? Scotch Global uses Enrol HQ, a reliable online schools’ admissions platform. When you enrol in Connect, you will be asked to set up an account through your email address. This will then take you to a parent dashboard that you are able to access at any time, update information and store information pertaining to your child’s enrolment securely. You will also be able to enrol another child into Connect or a Thrive programme (our after-school hours co-curricular academic programme). From here, you will be asked to pay an initial enrolment fee of $150 that will begin the process. Scotch Global’s admission team will review the information and will be in contact to schedule an interview with Head of Scotch Global and Head of Connect. ### Can I enrol at any time Enrolment into a year group can be requested at any time, however, the acceptance of the enrolment will be dependent on class sizes and our ability to cater for your child. ### What if my circumstances change? If your circumstances change and you need to withdraw your child, you must provide at least one terms notice to avoid any ongoing charges. We would work with your child’s new school provide as much information as possible to assist in a seamless transition. ### Are there any scholarships or discounts available for fees? Whilst there are no formal scholarships available for students, we may be able to source funding for extenuating circumstances. Formal application must be made in writing to the Head of Scotch Global. ## Technology ### Will the school provide a device for my child? As part of the tuition fee, your child will be supplied with an iPad, smart pencil and a keyboard. The device will have all learning software installed. This is the only device the students will need to participate in all learning requirements. Some students may wish to use an external monitor and keyboard, but this will need to be purchased independently. ### Is technical support available for online learning? Both students and parents will have access to IT support during school hours and email support after school hours. ### What measures are implemented to ensure a secure online learning environment? All the work completed online is monitored by the Connect teachers along with their interactions on Teams. ### How much time will my child spend on a screen? Your child will need to be on a screen for the collaborative lessons which is approximately 2.5 hours a day. However, much of this time is spent in discussion with the teacher and peers, it is very interactive and less about reading on screens. The independent work will be delivered through the online learning platform, however, during this time the activities asked of them will include handwriting in notebooks, reading physical books and completing practical activities such as art, science labs, cooking and material design. This would be no different to the technology use in a regular brick and mortar school. ### What happens if we lose internet connection during the collaborative sessions? Whilst this will be disappointing for your child, the lessons are all recorded and where there is value in going back and watching the lesson, they will be able to do so. The teacher will be aware that your child is no longer online and will contact them as soon as they can to relay any important information. It is rare that students lose internet connection, but we are aware this does happen and have planned for this event.
